Last summer you were asked to complete two artworks that represent you as a current self-portrait. One of the works was to be figurative, the other was to describe yourself through the use of metaphor and symbol only (non-figurative). You were asked to think of this first assignment as an opportunity to present yourself to your fellow students and faculty. It was also a way for you to introduce your voice through the critique process, which you all have experienced as an essential learning experience at AIB. You were asked to talk about your work, ideas, and materials you chose to use.
Undoubtedly, you have all learned a lot your first semester and will continue to second semester. As a way to assess that development, you will be required to repeat this assignment and present it along with a representation of your entire year's work during the all school end of the year critique held the week of May 13-17. During this critique, the faculty will ask you to talk about how your thinking has evolved in approaching the assignment.
We will return your first assignments during the last two weeks of your foundation seminar class.
Again, you are asked to think wide and broad with regards to materials. Any medium is welcomed. Any format is welcomed. For example, book, comic, 3-D work, etc. The 8.5 x 11 inch size is very specific however. Nothing smaller or larger will be allowed. You may, however, make something large and then photograph it to meet the size requirements.
