3-D Illustration Exhibit: Red Nose Studio

The new exhibit at 700 Beacon Street is a collection of photographs, sculpture, and video by Chris Sickels of Red Nose Studio.  Sickels creates three-dimensional sculptures and then photographs and films them to create remarkable works of art.  This is a uniquie opportunity to see both the finished "3-D illustrations" and the sculptures used to create them. 

The opening reception followed by an artist talk with Sickels is scheduled for 5pm this Thursday, November 10th.

The work of H. C. Liang at the ICA's Foster Prize

The Institute of Contemporary Art's biennial Foster Prize gives Boston-local artists the opportunity to exhibit in the museum and the chance to win the award sponsored by James and Audrey Foster and Louis Vuitton. All of the works by each of the artists are interesting and beautiful, but this post will focus on the work of Fred H. C. Liang, an artist who is originally from China but is now a Fine Arts professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Liang has several works displayed in the exhibit. Each piece contains tedious and eye-catching detail. Liang credits both Eastern and Western art as influences, including traditional chinese cut paper. Much of his work involves cut paper, including the giant “Dream of a Thousand Springs”, which is displayed across two walls and stretches onto the floor. Not only are lace-like patterns cut out of the paper, but the paper that remains is printed with a similar pattern in white.

His other work which stands out, perhaps because of the story behind it, is untitled. It is a large paper accordian which stretches nearly to the ceiling, supported by thin, transparent string and rests on a wooden podium. Barely visible on each folded face of the paper are the cutout outlines Chinese characters based on a secret language created by Chinese women called "nu shu".

Visiting Artist: Matthew Cobb

Matthew Cobb is a local artist who was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts and graduated from the Art Institute of Boston in 2014. Now he is returning (from the future?) in order to take the classes necessary to graduate.

Cobb is an illustrator and writer, his most popular work being Team Jumpe, which currently as a sequel in progress. He is most known, however, for creating misleading advertisements. These, though they don't necessarily have any lies within them, they could lead an ignorant reader to misinterpret his message, which is, of course, done on purpose.

Matthew Cobb will be in the AIB auditorium, room 215 at 700 Beacon Street, from 2:30 to 5:00 on November 15th, 2010, where he and a group of other visiting artists will discuss the artistic genius and how it manifests itself.   Students are encouraged to attend, especially since role will be taken. Food will not be served.

As a reminder to those who are not paying the most attention, Matthew Cobb is not actually a visiting artist, at least not in the standards that these types of announcements usually imply. He is actually a freshmen student testing the AIB Foundation Blog. As such, the time and date listed above for a discussion on artistic genius is actually a class. The class has many students, so it is not encouraged for more to fill up space when they shouldn't really be there. AIB Foundation Drawing Competition

The first AIB Foundation Drawing Competition sponsored by Canson Papers was a huge success! The competition was open to all AIB Foundation students in all mediums using a variety of papers supplied by Canson.

Ten pieces were selected by Faculty and Canson Representative to receive awards. There were many excellent pieces to choose from, all of the work was fantastic! (I did get a chance to take peek during the judging!)
