    About the AIB
    Foundation Program

    During your "foundation year," you learn and become proficient in the basics—from a professional artist's perspective. That means, for example, you don't only practice (and practice) drawing the world around you, you learn how to think about what you experience and observe, about how artists' perceptions of the world have influenced your own perceptions. The Foundation Year gives you invaluable perspective on what it means to be an artist. You will explore and expand your ways of seeing, drawing, and designing.

Line by Line

Line By Line is a new series on learning the basics of drawing underway at the NYTimes, presented by the artist and author James McMullan. Line By Line begins with installments on line, perspective, proportion and structure, and continues from there, using examples from art history to illuminate specific issues. Pencil and paper recommended.

"During the 12-week period of this column," says Mcmullan. " I will be working on posters for Lincoln Center Theater as well as on a children’s book, and I will share with you sketches from those processes if they seem to illuminate an aspect of drawing being discussed. I hope that readers will respond to this column and help to shape and expand its content. I will be only too happy to move into the more arcane aspects of art and drawing if comments indicate interest."  - [via the Opinionator, NYTimes]
