The Peace Project’s 2011 Call for Artists

On September 21st, World Peace Day, The Peace Project will get the country of Sierra Leone off the ground by providing 10,000 pairs of crutches and mobility devices to everyone in need throughout the entire post-conflict country of Sierra Leone, Africa (home to over 20% of the world's amputees).

We gathered the momentum needed to launch this heroic effort last year with The Peace Project's Call for Artists. This competition, the submission fees and the resulting sales from exhibit artwork were instrumental in funding the early days of The Peace Project. This year, we're launching another Call for Artists.

Artists from around the world, working in diverse mediums, are invited to submit their creative interpretations of peace. Their collective vision will be unveiled mid-October at Gallery 9 in Los Angeles.  The exhibit will subsequently travel to San Francisco and New York in conjunction with a simultaneous online exhibition.

An exhibit will be created using 150 selected pieces of artwork that will be reproduced on 1'x1' panels (30.5mm x 30.5mm) arranged in mosaic fashion to underscore the multicultural implications of global peace, and to communicate that through creativity and community, we can change the world.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top two entries.  An additional eight entries will be awarded Art Supply Gift Cards.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

This year's Peace Project Call for Artists will open on July 26.

• Open to all artists worldwide.

• Artists must be a member of TheWhole9.com and have a completed portfolio. (There is no cost to become a member. Click here to join.)

• Work must be two-dimensional and original work may be any medium.

• Original work may be any size or shape, however, submitted artwork must be square or cropped to square as all selected pieces will be printed and mounted (by The Whole 9) on 1 foot x 1 foot panels (approximately 30.5cm x 30.5cm) for the exhibition.

• A minimum of 150 works will be selected for inclusion in exhibition.

• If selected, artist must be able to provide a high-quality, high-resolution file (minimum of 300 dpi) of image that will be printed and mounted on a panel.

• Artists retain rights to submitted works, but grant The Whole 9 and The Peace Project rights to the digital reproduction of their submission(s) for The Peace Project’s traveling exhibition, commemorative book, and any other merchandise produced to raise funds for The Peace Project or promotion of The Peace Project and/or Operation Rise. ALL net proceeds from sales of artwork and merchandise will be used to fund Operation Rise and other Peace Project initiatives.

• A short explanation of the artist's vision about the piece must be included, along with a description of the medium.

FEE

• $10 per piece paid when piece is submitted online.

• There is no limit to the number of works that may be submitted.

• More than one piece from an artist may be selected and included in the exhibit.

DEADLINES

• Entries must be submitted online by midnight, Pacific Time, September 4.

• Notification of juried results will be announced September 18.

2011 BeanTown Poster Design Contest

The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival is excited to announce its second annual Festival Poster competition. This year's festival theme is Celebrate Global Music and Nature. Artwork should incorporate imagery related to this year's theme and to BeanTown/Boston.

The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival is celebrating its 11th anniversary, and we'd like to invite you to show your creative genius by creating a commemorative poster for this year's event. We will choose one poster to represent the 2011 festival. This poster will be displayed and sold through various distribution channels during the course of the festival and beyond.

The Berklee BeanTown Free outdoor festival takes place on Saturday, September 24, 2011. The outdoor festival stretches six blocks down Columbus Avenue in Boston's historic South End and features three stages of live music, arts, crafts, unique gifts, and many more activities. The Process: The Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival committee will evaluate entries. Results will be sent by email to the winner by September 1st. The winner will be asked to provide a written description of the poster. The winner's bio and art will be features on our websites: beantownjazz.org and Berklee.edu and in our souvenir program book. The winner will also receive two tickets to the Opening Night Reception and Concert, being held at the Berklee Performance Center.

The Criteria: The winning poster will be chosen based on general aesthetics and creativity of design, keeping in mind the theme "Celebrate Global Music and Nature".

The Deadline: All entries should be submitted by August 15, 2011.

Format: Resolution must be 300 dpi at final size, 24" x 36".

Formats Accepted: High resolution PDF, with fonts embedded or set to outlines; "Preferred Quark or InDesign Collet"; jpg of the file in full resolution.

By submitting your artwork via this process, you are giving berklee college of music and the berklee beantown jazz festival permission to use your design for merchandise sale and promotion.

Rising Juniors and Seniors: Apply for the Jay Kennedy Scholarship

The annual Jay Kennedy Scholarship, in memory of the late King Features editor, was funded by an initial $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation/King Features Syndicate and additional generous donations from Jerry Scott, Jim Borgman, Patrick McDonnell and many other prominent cartoonists. Submissions are adjudicated by a panel of top cartoonists and an award is given to the best college cartoonist. The recipient is feted at the annual NCS Reuben Awards Convention attended by many of the world’s leading cartoonists.

Applicants must be students at a 4-year college in the United States, Canada or Mexico who will be a Junior or Senior during the 2012-2013 academic year. Applicants do not have to be art majors to be eligible for this scholarship.

Along with a completed entry form, applicants are required to send 8 samples of their own cartooning artwork (copies only); noting if and where the work has been published, either in print or on the web. (See application for details.) DO NOT send original artwork.

DEADLINE: ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY DECEMBER 15, 2011

The applications will be judged by the National Cartoonists Society Foundation (NCSF) and the number of scholarships given out and their amounts will be at the discretion of the NCSF.

Prints U.S.A. is a nationally competitive, biennial exhibition sponsored by the Springfield Art Museum. Initiated in 1999, the exhibition recognizes and encourages printmaking in the United States and its possessions. Approximately $10,000 in cash, patron and Springfield Art Museum purchase awards are available each year.

Orhan Holding International Photography Contest 2011

This photography competition, which started to be organized internationally in 2005, has been a part of Orhan Holding's main cultural activities since 1998.

Contest will be held according to FIAP rules and regulations and all photographers who are interested are welcome to send their works.

This year's theme is "Contast"
Life is full of contrast... old and youn.. dark and light... black and white...
But the challenge is to see the beauty of the two uniting...

• The Contest includes three categories: Monochrome Prints, Color prints, and Digital (Manipulated) Prints
• Photographers can submit maxiumum of four works for each category
• The long side of the prints should be minimum 2500 pixels
• The resolution of the prints should be minimum 240 dpi
• The prints should be in JPEG file
• To participate in contest, it is necessary to send the prints via CD, DVD, or e-mail.  For prints which will be sent via e-mail, Orhan Holding assumes no liability in case the prints will not be received by us because of their sizes.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

You must provide the Art Center with three (3) items.

1. Digital images of your entries.
2. A completed entry form.
3. Payment of $15 per entry.

Several options exist for each item, as explained below. You may choose the combination most convenient for you.

Images:  Images should be sized to fit within a 1500x1000 pixel box. Much smaller images will put you at a disadvantage, and larger images will needlessly increase upload time if you submit online.  The images may then be mailed to The Art Center on a CD, emailed as attachments to LIS@artcenterofestes.com, or uploaded directly to the Art Center using the online submission form. Photo CDs will NOT be returned.

Entry Forms: You may access a printable entry form at http://artcenterofestes.com/Call.htm. Print out the form, fill it out and mail it to the Art Center to accompany a CD entry or emailed entries. If you use the Online Submission form (link at top of this page) to upload images to the Art Center, you do not need to submit a paper entry form.

Payment: The following methods of payment are acceptable:

CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE & AGREEMENTS

The following statements constitute an agreement between the artist and the Art Center of Estes Park. No exceptions will be made to these rules.

• Artwork must be offered for sale. The Art Center will retain a 40% commission on all artwork sold. Prices may not be changed after submission.
• The entry form must be completely filled out. The information recorded on this entry form is considered final and may not be changed. Entries without signatures(unless submitted electronically) or incomplete data will not be processed.
• Two-dimensional art must be appropriately framed and ready to hang. Acetate coverings, brackets, quick-frames, or any type of device leaving exposed glass or Plexiglas will not be accepted. The Art Center will exclude any entry that presents unusual installation problems, or is improperly framed
• Artwork must not differ from the entry images and CDs of accepted work will be retained until receipt of the art for display.
• All entries must meet size and weight requirements as listed below.
• Any requirements of the exhibit not fulfilled will result in disqualification
• The Art Center of Estes Park reserves the right to use reproductions of accepted artwork for the purpose of promotion of the exhibit which may include media outlets, poster, mailings and the Art Center’s web site.

SIZE LIMITATIONS

2-dimensional art shall not exceed 120 inches in perimeter, not including the frame. This equals the sum of the length of all 4 sides.

Example: 24" x 36"  = 120 inches.

3-dimensional art shall not exceed 60 pounds.

Wall pieces may not exceed 30 pounds and must include specific hanging instructions and hardware.

MINIATURES

If the artist is accepted into the main show via the jury process, the artist will be eligible to send up to TWO miniature pieces, in addition to the juried entry(s).

There is NO entry fee or jurying of the miniatures, which should be shipped with your accepted work.  Quality of these items should match that of your juried work. These smaller items have proven to be popular with show attendees and you are encouraged to participate in this opportunity.

Size limitations for miniatures are:      
Two-dimensional work:     The outside dimension of the frame is not to exceed 40 inches.  This equals the sum of all 4 sides.  Example: up to 8” X 12” maximum frame size.  Three-dimensional work:   The artwork, including base, should be able to fit into an 8” X 8” X 8” box.

DR. CONNIE STEWART
Dr Connie Stewart is a UNC Visual Arts Assistant professor and the Executive Director of the Center of Integrated Arts Education. Being a multi-media artist, Dr Stewart teaches Art History and Art Education classes and supervises a practicum in the public schools. She is active within the state of Colorado in programs that support Art Advocacy and continued arts curriculum development especially supporting contemporary arts practices as part of the public school curriculum. Her program areas include, Ceramics, Computer Graphics, Drawing, Fiber, Graphic Design, Jewelry, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture.
 
Dr Stewart was the 2002 Colorado Art Education Association Higher Education Educator of the year, and received the 2006 University of Northern Colorado Academic Excellence Award for Teaching Experience in Undergraduate Education, and the 2009 Academic Excellence Award for Faulty Advisement.

Seeking Artists and Designers to Recycle with Style

Seeking 6-8 artists to participate in the reFashion Show, a fundraiser featuring wearable art pieces made from recycled or waste materials.

The reFashion Show offers the opportunity for artists and designers to create and exhibit their work in support of a larger mission to promote recycling through creativity.

The event is organized by Long Way Home (http://www.longwayhomeinc.org), a non‐profit organization that is building an educational complex in Guatemala using recycled materials such as earth-filled tires and trash-filled plastic bottles. The event will be held in Newburyport, MA, on October 15th.

We are looking for Artisans who will Design and Bring to Life Visually Surprising and Dramatic, Over-the-Top Fashion Creations using RECYCLED OR WASTE MATERIALS that may include used metals, textiles, plastics and ideally all kinds of unexpected materials. Designers will be put in touch with a model with whom they can coordinate fitting appointments.

In addition to showing their pieces in the fashion show, artists will be able to show/sell their artwork at a booth at the event. There is no cost for the booths but we ask that the artists donate 30% of their profits to Long Way Home.

The Eliot School Seeking Art and Woodworking Teacher's Aids

Volunteer as an Art Teacher’s Aide or Woodworking Teacher's Aide in classes, some opportunities after-school, some during the school day, in programs we hold in Boston Public elementary schools.  Grades K-8. Class size: 13 maximum. Class length: 1 to 1-1/2 hour plus set-up, clean-up, prep. At the end of each semester, the aide will receive $100 stipend for the work they have done for the semester.

This is a perfect opportunity for those with potential interest in becoming art teachers. You'll learn in practice about teaching, project planning, classroom management, interaction with schools, and more. Hours depend on our particular contracts at the time and your availability. Schools are in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Roslindale, Roxbury and the South End.

This opportunity remains open throughout the year, with openings each semester.
The School is happy to complete school paperwork for internships and/or credit.

The Eliot School offers classes and workshops in arts and fine crafts to people of all ages. A full-service wood shop, sewing room and all-purpose art room make up our 1831 schoolhouse in Jamaica Plain. In addition, our School Partnership program sends art and woodworking teachers out to selected public schools in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, Roxbury and the South End.
