Description:

• Design and compose all promotional materials for exhibitions including showcards, catalogs, press releases and web-marketing emails.
• Create advertisements for exhibition and education programs.
• Maintain list of press contacts and media outlets.
• Help promote the Copley Society of art through print and electronic media.
• Administrative duties include website maintenance, exhibition coordination, sales, database entry and maintenance, and general correspondence (phone, e-mail, and letters). 

Qualifications:

• Four year college degree (recent grads preferred)
• Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver) in addition to Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work quickly and effectively with multiple tasks from multiple sources while paying close attention to detail and a strong commitment to teamwork within a small staff.
• Experience in non-profit or art organizations preferred.
• The ideal candidate for this position is organized, detail-oriented, pleasant and keenly interested art and nonprofits with an ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Working knowledge of social media sites.

38th Annual Light Work Grants in Photography

Light Work will award three grants of $2,000 to photographers, critics, or photo-historians. 

Applicants must redise in one of the following Central new York counties: Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Tioga, or Tompkins.

The Boston Public Schools Arts Department seeks current undergraduate and graduate students, studying in the fields of dance, music, theatre, visual arts, arts education, arts administration, and community arts to assist at various BPS district-wide festivals.

Volunteers will be charged with supporting BPS Arts staff in managing festival operations. Duties may include tasks such as preparing materials for the festival day, escorting school groups throughout the day’s activities, supporting teachers and students, specific artistic assistance, when needed, and miscellaneous tasks, as needed.

Participation in these events is an opportunity to connect with BPS Arts teachers district-wide, which may result in future collaborations. While there is no financial compensation for these positions, volunteers may earn credit toward fieldwork, internship or service learning requirements. Furthermore, volunteers will obtain important arts administration knowledge and a better understanding of coordinating and managing district-wide arts festivals in a public school district setting.

urFirstLook offers students a way to experience a major before entering college.

We are looking for a college student in any of the Arts and Design disciplines to go through a 5-day expose of their major with us. Your primary responsibility will be to instruct on one aspect of your major within those 5 days with a minimum of 2 hours for each day.

Gallery Instructors (GIs) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, work with elementary and secondary school groups from Boston, New England, and beyond. Each school year, GIs conduct tours for approximately 25,000 children in grades 2 to 12 in the many different collections and galleries of the MFA. Through interactive, object-based discussions, and hands-on learning activities in the galleries, GIs engage students in looking, thinking, and learning about art. We encourage applicants who reflect the diversity of Boston-area communities and the students we teach.

We will begin recruiting a new class of GITs (Gallery Instructors in Training) in January of 2012, and the selection process will take place in the spring of 2012. GITs will then have the opportunity to learn their way around the Museum, meet experienced GIs, follow tours, and become more familiar with the GI program. Initial training will begin in September of 2012, and new GIs will begin leading tours in early 2013.

Requirements:
• Mandatory attendance at initial weekly training sessions during fall of 2012
• Minimum two-year commitment as a Gallery Instructor, teaching one weekday morning per week after satisfactory
completion of initial training program
• Attendance at 2 GI Program meetings per year (fall and spring)
• Attendance strongly encouraged at collections training and professional development programs

Open Engagement is an international conference that sets out to explore various perspectives on art and social practice and expand the dialogue around socially engaged art making. The Open Engagement conference is an initiative of Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice MFA concentration. Directed and founded by Jen Delos Reyes and planned in conjunction with Harrell Fletcher and the Art and Social Practice students, this year’s conference features keynote presenters Tania Bruguera, Shannon Jackson, and Paul Ramirez Jonas. The work by these artists and scholars touchvon subjects including politics, economies, education, and representation.

Through conversations, presentations, workshops, interviews, open reflections, and related projects created for or presented at the conference, we will bevinvestigating, questioning, celebrating, and challenging the current state of art and social practice. This conference is a site where an intergenerational exchange can occur between emerging artists and established artists. This is also a site where transdisiplinary conversation is possible.

Open Engagement is a free conference that will take place May 18-20, 2012, in Portland, Oregon. Contributors are not asked to pay a registration fee and the public will not be charged to attend. Contributors to the event will be supported in the following ways: participants from out of town will be housed in Portland homes, select meals during the conference will be provided emphasizing community dining, and a variety of transportation will be provided drawing on Portland’s bike culture and public transportation.

You are invited to contribute to Open Engagement: Art and Social Practice by submitting your proposals for projects, performances, tours, interventions, presentations, or panel ideas (other formats are also welcomed). Submissions are due January 3, 2012.

We are organizing thematic groupings through-out the conference, so if applicable mark your submission under one of the following categories: Politics, Economies, Education,  and Representation.

Politics: This line of programming explores the intersections between Art and Activism, Power, Protest, Creative Tactics for Social Change and more.

Economies: This line of programming examines ideas of value alongside systems of exchange, focusing on alternative tactics in the contemporary context. From consuming to contributing, banking to bartering, the cost of living to the cost of giving and everything in between.

Education: This line of programming explores social practice methods related to alternative education, free schools, outdoor schools, socially engaged art in the academy, museums, K-12 education and pedagogical art practice.  We are seeking proposals that demonstrate a diversity of approaches to site-specific learning and facilitate workshops in our neighborhood classroom venue.

Representation: Who am I? Who are you? How do the representational strategies we use shape the space in between? This area of programming focuses on the formal and communicative choices that produce and circulate meaning through representation. Topics for exploration include documentary practices, authorial voice, history and memory, ethnography, presence and absence, language, power, the image of the body, the image of the community, the imprint of cultural artifacts, and the ways new technologies and social formations impact how we represent ourselves and each other to each other.

Gothic invites submissions from artists evincing a peculiar, perverse, idiosyncratic sensitivity, infl­uenced by literature, movies, television and the tabloids, in painting, drawing, sculpture, illustration, fashion, graphic design, animation, photography, video, digital media, computer-based works, installation and performance.

OCCCA's museum of the macabre will display supernatural mutations, bizarre curiosities permeated by fantastic and pathological themes. Gothic is a mix of Medievalism, Romanticism, science fiction, Victoriana, punk, the uncanny, the grotesque, and the erotic, inseparable from despair, fear and rapture. Gothic reveals the shadow within, the skull beneath the skin.

Juror: Amy V. Grimm Assistant Professor of Art History & Museum Studies: Irvine Valley College
Amy V. Grimm is an Independent Curator and Assistant Professor of Art History & Museum Studies at Irvine Valley College. Grimm received her B.A. in Psychology from the State University of New York in New Paltz, New York. She received a Graduate Certificate in Museum Management and a M.A. in Art History from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. Grimm's M.A. Thesis, is titled, Andy Warhol: An Inquiry into Self Identity and Portraiture. Ms. Grimm's area of specialization includes Modern and Contemporary European and American Art. Grimm's museum and academic career spans over fifteen years including work for the Albany Institute of History & Art, the South Carolina State Museum, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the Long Beach Museum of Art. As a museum curator, Grimm has developed and supervised over 40 exhibitions including independent projects and museum collaborations. Notable exhibitions include, Out of Eden: The Sculptural Work of Harry Geffert for the El Paso Museum of Art, and Sweet Subversives: Contemporary California Drawings for the Long Beach Museum of Art. Grimm's scholarly writings related to exhibition programming and independent critical reviews have been published as museum catalogs and articles in national publications such as Sculpture and Artlies magazines. Grimm is past president of the Border Museum Association in El Paso, Texas; an organization that sponsors events to promote international arts partnerships. Working for the College Art Association, Grimm has developed annual conference programming in cities such as Seattle, Atlanta, Boston and New York. For the College Art Association's Annual Conference in 2007, in New York City, Grimm chaired the panel Out of the Frame: Creativity and Change. This panel addressed curatorial risk taking in light of controversial topics and technological challenges. Also during the 2007 conference, Grimm curated The Media Lounge, a unique space dedicated to showing contemporary new media, such as the MIT Media Lab, Potter-Belmar Labs and several independent filmmakers and videographers. Grimm continues to lecture extensively on topics such as Andy Warhol, Contemporary Art and Museum Studies. As an Assistant Professor of Art History & Museum Studies, Grimm is developing a new undergraduate program in Applied Museum Studies for Irvine Valley College. Students participating in the program will gain the knowledge and skills necessary for a variety of employment opportunities in museums and other arts organizations.

The Photographic Historical Society of New England (PHSNE) in order to share New England’s rich photographic history with visual art students has implemented a yearly competition. The winning student of this competition will receive a $1,000 cash grant. 

The competition is open to full or part-time New England high school, art school, technical school, college, and university students who are exploring the visual media in any of the following categories. It is not open to professional photographers or professionals in the visual arts who may be taking courses.

• Modifying a currently out-of-production still or movie camera of any size or type that is more than 50 years old (pre-1960), or a Polaroid camera to produce images using currently available materials in either film or digital formats.
• Creating new images by modifying traditional photographic images and transforming these images using photochemical processes, graphic arts, digital technology, or multimedia techniques.
• Creating a photo essay relating to New England consisting of at least 8 original images using analog film: black & white, color negative, or transparency. The subject to be determined by the contestant.
• Writing an article of at least 1,000 words about photographic images, processes, history, or the analysis of a photographer’s body of work. The topic must relate to some aspect of New England photography and should be based on primary source material.
