Description: This is an all media exhibition that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Target Gallery. This is open to all artists nationally and internationally. Artists are asked to submit work that responds to world events that have occurred over the past 25 years.

A special catalog and poster will acompany this exhibition.

Juror: J.W. Mahoney is an artist, critic and independent curator who serves as Washington's Corresponding Editor for Art in America. He is an Affiliate Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, and his latest exhibition, "Carceral," will open at Curator's Office in Washington in May of this year.

AIB Massachusetts Avenue Storefront Art Project

A juried exhibition celebrating The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University’s
Centennial Year and upcoming move to Porter Square

 

Calling AIB students, alumni, faculty and staff!

As you may know, The Art Institute of Boston will be moving from Kenmore Square to the Lesley University campus in Porter Square in the next few years.  In addition, in the 2012/13 academic year, AIB will be celebrating its Centennial year, having educated artists and designers since 1912.  To celebrate our 100^th year and to prepare for our move to Porter Square, we are hosting the AIB Massachusetts Avenue Storefront Art Project in the fall of 2012.

 

We are very excited about our future neighborhood and would like to start building relationships with our new neighbors. Towards this goal, we will mount exhibitions in many storefront windows along Massachusetts Avenue near Lesley’s University Hall and Doble campuses.  The goal of the project is to showcase a vibrant, exciting group of storefront exhibitions created by the AIB community all along this portion of Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. All current AIB students, alumni, faculty, and staff members are invited to submit a proposal for a storefront display.  Work in all media is encouraged.  A stipend of $250 will be awarded to all proposals selected.

 

From the Doble Campus along Massachusetts Avenue up to the Porter Square Shopping Center, selected storefront windows will display work created by AIB students, alumni, faculty and staff.  Already, a number of stores have offered to host exhibits in their storefront windows and we expect more to commit to such exhibitions in the coming weeks. Each store boasts a unique personality and takes great pride in the presentation of their windows to the public. These windows are their connection to the outside world, and attract passers-by with their beautiful displays. Storefronts have been selected based on visual potential, their eagerness to work with our artists, and their willingness to let the artwork take the lead.

 

So, we invite you to submit your most compelling work! Work may be two- or three-dimensional such as painting, prints, or photographs; videos or animations; illustration or design pieces; sculptures or site-specific installations; to name a few. You may offer work you have already created or you may choose to create something entirely new for this event. Proposals may be submitted by individuals or by collaborative teams.

 

Submissions will be accepted online from Thursday, May 17 until Friday, June 22.  The application portal can be reached at aib.slideroom.com. Be sure to select AIB Storefront Art Project under Active Programs. Submission costs are $10 per proposal, which will let you upload up to 10 images and supporting documents. Check back frequently as we are actively adding new host windows. Windows sizes range from small, enclosed bays to large, floor-to-ceiling panes that extend across the width of the store. Winning submissions will be selected by a jury and will be paired up with appropriate host windows.

Selected proposals will be notified by August 1, and will be put in touch with their host business to work out the details. Each window is different and the relationship between the store’s displayed product and artwork will be defined in collaboration with the host business. Work will likely be installed in early September and removed in mid-October. Actual dates may shift slightly and will be verified shortly. Each display will include a specially designed placard with the name of the artist(s), their relationship to AIB (student, alumni, faculty, etc.), a brief artist statement, and the AIB/Lesley logos.

Vocational Design and Visual Communications Teacher Wanted For School Year 2012-2013

Job Description: Vocational Design and Visual Communications Teacher

The Boston Arts Academy, a public high school for the visual and performing arts, is starting its 15th year in September 2012 with 440 students in Grades 9-12. It is a joint project of the Professional Arts Consortium, Inc., (comprising the Berklee College of Music, Boston Architectural Center, the Boston Conservatory, Emerson College Massachusetts College of Arts, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts) and the Boston Public Schools. The Boston Arts Academy is charged with being a laboratory and a beacon for artistic and academic innovation. The Boston Arts Academy prepares a diverse community of aspiring artist-scholars to be successful in their college or professional careers and to be engaged members of a democratic society.

This innovative school features a college preparatory curriculum supporting integrated and interdisciplinary teaching and learning among arts and academic disciplines. Students explore the arts in both traditional and new media forms.
The Academy’s program is enriched by the involvement of the six members of the Professional Arts Consortium. Both the program and the student body at the Academy reflects the culture, ethnic and linguistic diversity of Boston.

The Academy is a Pilot School and a member of the Boston Pilot Schools Network, a group of Boston Public Schools that, by union contract, have been granted increased autonomy and flexibility to be laboratories of educational innovation.  This includes the right to extend the school day and year for both faculty and students.

Teachers at the Academy undertake a number of special responsibilities. The Academy offers academic classes as well as classes in the visual and performing arts. Often classes integrate artistic and academic subjects. Faculty members work together to develop curriculum in all areas. The school day for students
has been scheduled to run from approximately 7:55 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:55 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays. There is a weekly faculty meeting on Fridays that ends at 3:30.

The school year for students will be similar to the Boston Public Schools, but the actual school calendar may differ in terms of professional days for teachers and other aspects. All students will be members of an Advisory Group and most faculty will serve as Advisors. (Advisory is a small group of students who come together periodically to provide academic, social and emotional support to all students.) Many teachers also teach a grade-level writing course to students.

Students are assessed through a variety of measures: Traditional tests, performances, exhibitions, and portfolios. More comprehensive material about the approach to teaching and learning is available upon request, as well as on the website.

Responsibilities:

1. Teach visual art classes in different media including, but not limited to, Adobe
suite programs including web design and animation, drawing, painting, 3D media,
and printed media.
2. Help design, implement and teach design curriculum 1,2,3,4
3. Design and implement student assessment
4. Lead Vocational Design and Visual Communications certification track
5. Teach figure drawing
6. Oversee departmental technology and equipment
7. Implement and oversee department and student blogs
8. Lead and implement exhibition of student work in and out of school building
9. Lead archivist for department
10. Lead department in design/technology vision
11. Identify and facilitate student design competitions
12. Participate in the creation of an integrated interdisciplinary arts-infused
curriculum including producing exhibitions.
13. Lead an advisory group of 8-12 students, providing advice, support and
evaluation for assigned students.
14. Teach OR co-teach a grade-level writing seminar.
15. Attend weekly visual arts team meetings and period work sessions as scheduled.
16. Along with other core visual arts faculty, participate in strategic planning and
department management. Areas include but are not limited to assessment,
recruitment and outreach, implementing technology, student case management,
and exhibition/competition/partnership participation.
17. Communicate regularly with parents/caregivers about student progress.
18. Arrange and attend evening meetings with families of students in Advisory
Group (and other students as appropriate) as least twice a year, and be generally
accessible to families.
19. Accept flexible assignments, such as team and interdisciplinary teaching, working
with different age groups and ability levels, etc.
20. Work with university, college and community collaborators.
21. Perform general administrative tasks to teaching and advising.
22. Work for two days after the end of school year in June reviewing and evaluating
year and completing activities.
23. Participate in one annual retreat which could fall on a weekend.
24. Work an extended day of eight hours, with occasional additional time as required
for student performance and presentation activities.
25. Take part in curriculum workshops, tentatively scheduled for the week of August
27, 2012.

Qualifications:

Required:
1. Possession of (or eligibility to receive) a Massachusetts preliminary license
in Visual Art-5-12. For more information on teacher licensure, call the
Massachusetts Department of Education at 781-338-6600.
2. Minimum three years experience in the field of design ( can include recent
cooperative teaching experience, or two years with a Master’s degree).
3. Bachelors Degree (copy of transcript required).
4. Commitment to the arts as an important element in a complete education.
5. Commitment to cultural, ethnic and linguistic diversity as an element in a
complete education.
6. Experience and/or willingness to be trained in integrated or theme-based
curriculum and performance, or portfolio-based assessment.
7. Commitment to and demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction in the
classroom.
8. Ability to take on responsibilities and prioritize quickly.
9. Flexible working hours.
10. Ability to work within a complex bureaucracy.
11. Excellent communication skills.
12. Meets/will meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed
and “Highly Qualified” according to NCLB.
13. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such
authorization by their first day of employment.

Preferred:

Three years teaching experience, preferably in an urban high school setting.
Voc ed certified in Graphic Design
Masters Degree or equivalent thereof.
Ability and/or certification to teach in multiple subject areas, such as graphic
design or costume design.
5. Experience or an interest in interdisciplinary work.
6. Fluency in languages in addition to English.
7. Experience as an artist.
8. Interest or experience in more than one discipline.
9. Experience working with local cultural institutions.
10. Experience with new technology relating to arts and education.
11. Experience working in a heterogeneous classroom.
12. Experience with portfolio assessment.

MASS Design Group is seeking a full time graphic designer in our Boston, MA office for a variety of graphic design and digital media projects, each focused on amplifying the way we share the impact of MASS’s work. Projects would include preparation of presentations and graphic methods of displaying and articulating MASS's work. The ideal candidate will additionally be familiar with basic video editing, web based media applications, and animation software, such as Adobe After Effects or similar. Work will include maintaining and updating MASS Design Group's website and graphic identity that will routinely update our followers through newsletters, blog posts, and online campaigns.

MASS looks for candidates with impressive graphic design skills, and an outstanding work ethic who are ready and willing to go above and beyond in designing innovative and captivating media design. Pitch an idea for the AIB Centennial Celebration commercial!

Would you like a chance to become a permanent part of AIB’s history?
 
We are currently conducting a contest to pick an idea for an animated television commercial promoting AIB’s Centennial Celebration!  Yes, that’s right, AIB is turning 100 years old during the 2012/13 academic year.  And we’ll be celebrating in a variety of ways throughout the year, with special exhibitions, visiting artist talks, student and alumni exhibitions, and more.  We will also be spreading the word about AIB through advertisements, banners, billboards, and this television commercial. We are looking for some terrific visual ideas that encapsulate what our school is all about!
 
The commercial will be 30 seconds long and can be done in any visual medium that can be animated.  Your proposal for a commercial should be in the form of a visual script or storyboard of what you are proposing to have produced as an animated work.  The elements that must be included in the commercial are:

1.   our special Centennial motto “Where Ideas Take Shape.”

2.   the college’s full title:  The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University

3.   the AIB and Lesley logos

4.   each of our school’s majors (Animation, Illustration, Design, Photography, Fine Arts and Art History)

We need for the fact that it is our 100th year / Centennial Celebration to be prominent in the commercial you propose.  

Real photos and images of fine art are encouraged in your proposed commercial.

There will be a $200 prize for the commercial concept that is selected. All ideas submitted may wind up in the final commercial and all artists whose work is used in the commercial will be given credit for their contributions to the project.  A team of AIB Animation students will work together to create this commercial over the coming summer. The winner of this contest can choose whether or not they want to be a part of the animation team that works on the final project. There is no obligation to the winner other than providing the artwork that will serve as the inspiration for the commercial.
 
The deadline for submissions of proposals for this TV commercial is May 23!

• Knowledge of, but not reliant on, JavaScript frameworks (jQuery, Underscore, etc.)
• Familiarity with JavaScript design patterns (this is important!)
• Working knowledge of back-end/middle technology (preferably Java or PHP) and database technology (preferably MySQL)
• Experience using version control, requirements, and bug tracking systems.
• A creative approach to problem solving, innovation, and issue resolution.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with team about code, architecture, and design.
• Proven experience building complex, scalable, maintainable, cross-browser-compatible web applications.
• Ability to write well-abstracted, reusable code for UI components.
• A passion for creating engaging and intuitive user experiences.

Call for Entries: Sustaining / Creating

 

A national juried exhibition of emerging artists, ages 16-25, with disabilities.

Deadline: July 8, 2012

Sustaining / Creating asks emerging artists to showcase work that illuminates innovative viewpoints on sustainability and contemporary creativity. Beyond its scientific definition, sustainability references notions of responsibility and stewardship of our natural world in all facets of human interaction–from the environmental to the cultural. Sustainability indicates the capacity to endure.

Submitted artwork should illustrate these thematic ideas, which may be achieved through broad, abstracted references or detailed personal creations. Your submission might also reflect your experience of living with a disability and its role in shaping or transforming your art.

This exhibition is presented by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ VSA & Accessibility Office and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

The exhibition
Fifteen artists will be selected for the exhibition and will share $60,000 in cash awards: a $20,000 grand prize, a $10,000 first award, a $6,000 second award, and 12 awards of excellence of $2,000 each.

The exhibition takes place at the Smithsonian Institution’s S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, D.C., from September 2012 to January 2013 and may travel nationally to additional venues. Awardees will be honored at an opening reception on Capitol Hill.

Who can apply?
The call is open to artists ages 16–25 living in the United States who have a disability. As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Previous award recipients are not eligible to apply.

Artwork
Submissions must be original work completed within the last three years and after the onset of disability.

Eligible media include but are not limited to paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil, or charcoal); fine art prints; photography; computer-generated prints; digital art; and time-based media (video, film). All work must have a visual component. Two-dimensional artwork should not exceed 60 inches in either dimension. Sculpture should not exceed 24 inches in any dimension.

Fragile or precious materials that cannot withstand handling, storage, and transportation will not be accepted.

The jury process
A panel of distinguished practicing artists, curators, and arts administrators will determine work standards, review submitted materials, and select the 15 artists for the exhibition. The jury looks at the following qualities when selecting exhibit artists:
• Demonstration of original ideas in the work submitted
• Connection to exhibition theme
• Visual cohesion among the images submitted

Work that suggests visual plagiarism, such as a direct copy of another artist’s work, will not be accepted. All decisions are final.

Applying to this call
All materials should be submitted in digital format through CaFE at callforentry.org. No slides will be accepted. Interested artists will be required to create a CaFE profile to apply.

Do not send original artwork.

Please have the following materials ready when applying for this call for art:

1. 4 digital images of selected artwork, formatted to CaFE standards

2. Caption information for each artwork digital image: Artwork title, Year made, Medium, Dimensions, Description

3. A short biography of the artist (one paragraph) that includes hometown, hobbies, interests, academic achievements, honors and awards received, and future goals.

4. Personal statement (2 pages maximum, Word or PDF format) that answers the following questions:
• Describe how your artwork relates to the exhibit theme of Sustaining / Creating.
• What role does art play in living with your disability? Does your disability affect your artwork in any way?
• When did you start creating your artwork and what motivated you to begin?

5. 1 digital image of the artist’s headshot

Supplemental material
Film and video artists must complete an application in CaFE, then should supplement their application by mailing a CD or DVD of their full-length work. On the CaFE application, please allocate at least one of the four JPEG image slots to a still from your video or film.

Any CDs or DVDs received must be ready to play using Windows Media Player, Real Player, or QuickTime. U.S.-compatible formats are encouraged; no VHS tapes or mini-DVDs will be accepted.

The jury will review two minutes of a video or audio file along with the four submitted images. Artists should note a specific two-minute segment to be reviewed, indicating the segment times in their submission. The jury may opt to view the entire video based on this segment.
