Museum of Fine Arts Volunteer Opportunity

Gallery Instructors (GIs) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, work with elementary and secondary school groups from Boston, New England, and beyond. Each school year, GIs conduct tours for approximately 25,000 children in grades 2 to 12 in the many different collections and galleries of the MFA. Through interactive, object-based discussions, and hands-on learning activities in the galleries, GIs engage students in looking, thinking, and learning about art. We encourage applicants who reflect the diversity of Boston-area communities and the students we teach.

We will begin recruiting a new class of GITs (Gallery Instructors in Training) in January of 2012, and the selection process will take place in the spring of 2012. GITs will then have the opportunity to learn their way around the Museum, meet experienced GIs, follow tours, and become more familiar with the GI program. Initial training will begin in September of 2012, and new GIs will begin leading tours in early 2013.

Requirements:
• Mandatory attendance at initial weekly training sessions during fall of 2012
• Minimum two-year commitment as a Gallery Instructor, teaching one weekday morning per week after satisfactory
completion of initial training program
• Attendance at 2 GI Program meetings per year (fall and spring)
• Attendance strongly encouraged at collections training and professional development programs

Call for Submission for the MFA 2012 Community Arts Initiative: The Artist Project

The Artist Project is a collaborative exhibition between an established artist, eight after-school community organizations in the Boston area, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA). It culminates in a 6 month prominent exhibition in the Linde Family Wing of the MFA. The selected Artist will receive a substantial honorarium as well as budget for supplies relating to the project.

Projects begin in September and conclude by June. A stipend is provided. Submissions are reviewed by a panel composed of representatives from the MFA, the SMFA, and participating community organizations.

ICA VISITOR SERVICES GALLERY ASSISTANT - Part Time

The ICA seeks reliable, strong customer service oriented individuals for this position which involves a combination of gallery security, museum education, and exhibition interpretation responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Visitor Assistants act as the primary point of security for the artwork and the visitors. The primary responsibility of a Visitor Assistant is the safety of the artwork and the enforcement of museum policies. A Visitor Assistant is responsible for monitoring the gallery spaces and protecting the art while engaging with the public to answer questions and provide information about the exhibits and the ICA. A Visitor Assistant greets visitors as they enter the galleries and ensures that all guests have proper museum access.

Please note that this work will require standing for long periods of time, adherence to dress code and museum policies, and working some evening, weekend and holiday hours.

Responsibilities of a Visitor Services Gallery Assistant:

1. Welcomes and monitors visitors to ensure that all guests who enter the galleries have either purchased an admission ticket or are identified as staff or special guest;
2. Monitors large numbers in museum areas to provide a smooth flow of visitation, while keeping the safety of the artwork the main priority, and enforces museum policies
2. Responds to questions from the public and promotes programs when applicable, enforces museum policies.
3. Serves as an advocate for the visitor while promoting the safety of the museum; communicates consistently with visitors to ensure a positive museum experience.
4. Assists in maintaining the inventory of museum brochures and literature, monitors the gallery space and reports on any incidents or issues
5. Perform other duties as directed by management

Visitor Services Assistants will work a set schedule during weekdays, weekends and Thursday and Friday evenings, as well as some holiday hours.

Qualifications:

- Experience working in a fast paced environment
- Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays
- Experience with or knowledge of contemporary visual art
- Experience in a security related position
- Customer service experience
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills
- Friendly and outgoing, able to conduct oneself in a polite and professional
manner in a variety of situations.
- Ability to assert oneself when needed in order to enforce policies and
protect artwork.
- Ability to use good judgment and to respond in handling crowds and
waiting lines; remain calm and present a professional demeanor

Smithsonian Fellowship Opportunities in American Art 2012–13

The Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery invite applications for research fellowships in art and visual culture of the United States. Fellowships are residential and support full-time independent and dissertation research.

Application Procedures

The stipend for a one-year predoctoral fellowship is $30,000, plus research and travel allowances. The stipend for a senior or postdoctoral fellowship is $45,000, plus research and travel allowances. The standard term of residency is twelve months, but shorter terms will be considered; stipends are prorated for periods of less than twelve months.

Only one application is necessary; applicants will automatically be considered in all relevant award categories. Applicants interested in a specific named fellowship are encouraged to provide a statement that indicates how their research topic is particularly suited to that award.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their research proposals with potential Smithsonian advisors before submitting applications.

Deadline: January 15 is the application deadline for fellowships to begin on or after June 1, 2012.

Intern with the Society of Illustrators in NY

The Society of Illustrators is now accepting applications for highly motivated interns to join our team this fall.

We are looking for top-notch students available at least one day per week from 9am-5pm. Internship duties include packing and shipping art work, updating exhibition databases, cataloging our permanent collection and many more.  Interns will learn what it takes to work in a museum and will be exposed to some of the greatest illustrations and illustrators of the past and present.
