Call for Entries: Net Works Publication - Anatomy of a Basketball Net

Dr. James Naismith, who created the game of basketball in Springfield, MA, posed a recycled peach basket as the first hoop in 1891. Now nets help break a ball’s fall, give players a sense of depth for good aim, and allow refs to see that a basket was made. Beyond these functions, nets add to the audio, kinetic, and aesthetic experience that leave players striving for “Nothin But Net”.

Over a year ago NCAA (New Craft Artists in Action) team captain launched MOLTENi Net Works in Boston. Bringing together makers and players in collaborative exchange, the project aims to create functional, hand-crafted basketball nets for neglected public hoops. Inspired by DIY slow production, this process fosters creative problem solving, urban upkeep, and re-purposing of abandoned space to build a pro-active network between artists, athletes, and neighbors.

In an effort to expand this platform to a broader spectrum of participation and accessibility, NCAA will compose a printed publication of knit and crochet net patterns designed by YOU! This compilation, produced by an exceptional team of Boston innovators (YarnOverTime, Golden Arrows, Publication Studio) will be distributed across the country and beyond, made available in stores, libraries, online, or via snail mail. It will also pose as a text book for workshops and resource for participants who need a guide.

2011 graduates and students currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs in advertising, graphic design, photography, illustration, and new media are eligible for the competition, and are invited to submit published or unpublished work in any category.  Student entries mirror professional categories and are judged by the best talents in the education/professional world. Passive Services
Most of the services are indeed passive services, which means that you do not need to take action to activate; for example we send the press releases for all the winners without any additional costs. In addition the winners are published in our yearly ResultBook, on top of that, all the participants are given a free online portfolio sponsored by Salone del Designer where they can communicate their designs online. Proof of Creation

Results

Harvard Kennedy School Newspaper Seeking Layout Person

16 page, Biweekly student newspaper for the Harvard Kennedy School is looking for a new layout person for the Spring.

Open Engagement 2012 Call for Submission

Open Engagement is an international conference that sets out to explore various perspectives on art and social practice and expand the dialogue around socially engaged art making. The Open Engagement conference is an initiative of Portland State University’s Art and Social Practice MFA concentration. Directed and founded by Jen Delos Reyes and planned in conjunction with Harrell Fletcher and the Art and Social Practice students, this year’s conference features keynote presenters Tania Bruguera, Shannon Jackson, and Paul Ramirez Jonas. The work by these artists and scholars touchvon subjects including politics, economies, education, and representation.

Through conversations, presentations, workshops, interviews, open reflections, and related projects created for or presented at the conference, we will bevinvestigating, questioning, celebrating, and challenging the current state of art and social practice. This conference is a site where an intergenerational exchange can occur between emerging artists and established artists. This is also a site where transdisiplinary conversation is possible.

Open Engagement is a free conference that will take place May 18-20, 2012, in Portland, Oregon. Contributors are not asked to pay a registration fee and the public will not be charged to attend. Contributors to the event will be supported in the following ways: participants from out of town will be housed in Portland homes, select meals during the conference will be provided emphasizing community dining, and a variety of transportation will be provided drawing on Portland’s bike culture and public transportation.

You are invited to contribute to Open Engagement: Art and Social Practice by submitting your proposals for projects, performances, tours, interventions, presentations, or panel ideas (other formats are also welcomed). Submissions are due January 3, 2012.

We are organizing thematic groupings through-out the conference, so if applicable mark your submission under one of the following categories: Politics, Economies, Education,  and Representation.

Politics: This line of programming explores the intersections between Art and Activism, Power, Protest, Creative Tactics for Social Change and more.

Economies: This line of programming examines ideas of value alongside systems of exchange, focusing on alternative tactics in the contemporary context. From consuming to contributing, banking to bartering, the cost of living to the cost of giving and everything in between.

Education: This line of programming explores social practice methods related to alternative education, free schools, outdoor schools, socially engaged art in the academy, museums, K-12 education and pedagogical art practice.  We are seeking proposals that demonstrate a diversity of approaches to site-specific learning and facilitate workshops in our neighborhood classroom venue.

Representation: Who am I? Who are you? How do the representational strategies we use shape the space in between? This area of programming focuses on the formal and communicative choices that produce and circulate meaning through representation. Topics for exploration include documentary practices, authorial voice, history and memory, ethnography, presence and absence, language, power, the image of the body, the image of the community, the imprint of cultural artifacts, and the ways new technologies and social formations impact how we represent ourselves and each other to each other.

Deadline coming up! Image Submissions for Tikkun Magazine

Tikkun Magazine’s upcoming Winter issue will have a special section on Restorative Justice. Are you an Artist or Illustrator who would be excited to have work published on the web and in print?

Here's what we're looking for:

* Images or original works of art that illustrate conflict resolution, restorative justice, healing circles, community building, community responses to trauma, and positive relationships. 

* Any work of art that portrays a sort of empathy. Examples: empathy for people you have hurt, empathy for your own hurt childhood self.

* Photos or JPGs of paintings, prints or other sorts of fine art that evoke something about the socially transformative power relating to Restorative Justice as a movement.
