20th Medicine Wheel Installation

Thursday, December 1st, 2011, 24-hour vigil

Medicine Wheel is an epic work of art created by Michael Dowling, Artistic Director of Medicine Wheel Productions. Produced annually since 1992 in conjunction with World AIDS Day (also known as A Day Without Art), “Medicine Wheel,” a 24-hour vigil with a major sculptural art installation, brings people from every walk of life and every social class together to commemorate the tragedy of the AIDS epidemic, or any loss, in their own communities and worldwide. The primary visual component is the wheel itself: thirty-six pedestals and portable shrines arranged in a circle.

Dowling developed Medicine Wheel to be a part of A Day Without Art, the visual arts community’s annual response to the AIDS crisis that flowered in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in New York City and other artistic centers. While most activities associated with A Day Without Art no longer take place, Medicine Wheel has grown in importance as Boston’s largest annual observation of World AIDS Day.  Each year the installation is based around a different element: fire, water, earth or air.  This 20^th incarnation of the Medicine Wheel is a water year and will focus on the power of art to heal, nurture, and transform.

The Medicine Wheel Vigil is true public art; the community is involved as participants and co-creators.  This year, youth from around the city, hosted by the young people at Medicine Wheel, are creating a cultural happening from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Thursday, December 1^st. A youth forum on HIV/AIDS will follow this hour from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  We anticipate more than 200 of Boston’s young people to participate.

Additionally, an offering of song, poetry, and dance will mark every hour of the vigil, and various rituals rooted in water. Contributing artists include: Cellist Sam Ou, the Nebula String Quartet, Until Tomorrow Productions, Glass Ensemble, Brandeis University Dance Troupe, dancers Deanna Pellechia and Ingrid Schatz, and many more. A range of spiritual and faith traditions will also be represented in Medicine Wheel’s vigil, including the Pagan community (led by Bruce Baldwin), Jewish, Christian, Native American, and others. As in years past, all are invited to leave personal mementos such as jewelry, letters, poems, photos and other items in Medicine Wheel.  Objects left are placed within the Wheel’s pedestals at the conclusion of the vigil, joining those left in previous years.

Medicine Wheel will be open to the public Monday, November 28 through Wednesday, November 30, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and for the full 24-hours on Thursday, December 1.

Fort Point Open Studios weekend will be held this year Friday through Sunday, October 14-16. More than 150 artists will open their studio doors to thousands of visitors. In addition to the Saturday and Sunday hours from 11 to 6pm, selected studios are open during a Friday Preview Evening, from 4pm to 7:00 pm on October 14th.

Explore the historic waterfront warehouses that are home to painters, sculptors, ceramicists, jewelers, performance artists, fashion designers, printmakers, book artists, photographers, and more. Meet local artists and craftspeople, and get a behind the scenes look at where Boston artists create their work. Find established artists, and discover new emerging talents. Stroll, ponder, and browse. Buy original art from the people who make it.

Visitors to Open Studios can explore more than 10 buildings in the Fort Point neighborhood, plus galleries and creative design shops. All buildings are in easy walking distance of each other. Free participatory art-making activities for children will take place at Made in Fort Point, FPAC’s store and gallery at 12 Farnsworth Street on Saturday and Sunday/.

GLOVEBOX Short Film & Animation Festival

GLOVEBOX is hosting its first ever film festival June 11th at the Somerville Theatre. The event (2 showtimes) will showcase short films and animations from the local Boston and New York area.

The Festival is also hosting a mini poetry slam in between films.

Illuminations is a rotating art exhibit housed in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, designed to enhance the environment of care.

Our goal is to provide a physical and virtual meeting place for figurative artists in Boston. We like diversity of approach, aesthetic, and philosophy, but we all share the desire to make better pictures by working at our craft and talking with one another. We want to provide artists who paint and draw the figure an artistic location that is neither overly academic nor dominated by current trends. Though we meet to draw and paint from the model every Wednesday and Saturday, this is not just a drop-in group. The BFAC believes that if talented artists come together as a movement, we can change the art culture. Don't come expecting only to get- come to give and be a part of something.

"The War and Peace Project"

Led by artist Laura "Lola" Baltzell and dubbed "Team Tolstoy," a group of artists, including AIB Fine Arts major Emma Rhodes '12, meets every Friday afternoon in an East Boston studio.  They have spent the past nine months making 7"x5" collages from each page of Baltzell's 1970's Russian edition of Tolstoy's "War and Peace."

300 of the completed works will be on view at the Atlantic Works Gallery, 80 Border Street in East Boston from December 3 - 18. 

Exhibition and Opening Reception: Friday, Deember 3rd from 6-9pm.

Russian fare and entertainment will be provided.
