Fourth Wall Project’s newest exhibition opened on Friday night at their gallery space at 132 Brookline Avenue, Boston. When entering the space you are immediately faced with the exhibition’s title “None More Black,” although it is difficult to see the connection between the title of the show and the work featured in it. “None More Black” showcases sculptures, murals and paintings as well as works on paper. Each artist creates their own distinct space within the gallery while dealing with the subjects of life, death, rebirth and metamorphosis. The exhibit, which was curated by Meighan O'Toole (of Juxtapoz and My Love for You), features new work by Tony Bevilacqua, Chad Chesko, Bill Dunlap and Elisabeth Timpone.
Bill Dunlap’s work occupies a majority of the entryway to the gallery. His mural and works on wood and canvas are reminiscent of primitive masks painted with saturated color, ornate patterns and thick black outlines. Passing by Tony Bevilacqua’s sculpture, which rests in a pinwheel of flat pastel colors, you’ll see more pieces by Bill Dunlap. Chad Chesko dominates the back wall of the gallery. Chesko’s section predominantly consists of works on paper and a large mural, which serves as a background to the impressive body of work on display. Chesko creates figures made up of calligraphic, west-coast-graffiti inspired lines. Chesko’s pieces are contrasted, on the opposite wall, with work by Elisabeth Timpone. Her subjects are pure line drawings executed with expert precision. Elisabeth Timpone’s body of work depicts subjects illustrated in a new, primitive, yet elegant style incorporating intricate line patterns and thick fields of flat black. Between Elisabeth Timpone and Chad Chesko is a wall taken up by more of Tony Bevilacqua’s artwork. It is easy to see the relationship of his sculptures to his 2-D work due to the highly saturated colors and graphic compositions. “None More Black” is an intriguing and cohesive show that deserves a visit.
