MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

AIB’S Annual All Student Meeting takes place on Wednesday, February 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 215 at 700 Beacon Street.

In recent months, we’ve made some significant progress on the design and required governmental approvals for the planned new AIB facilities in Porter Square, on the campus of Lesley University. During this meeting, our architectural team and AIB leaders will show you the current state of the design of these facilities, including the design for the exterior; the interior spaces such as classrooms, labs, and studios; the galleries and library; and the plans for each academic area.
 
Please remind your classes of this meeting, and encourage them to participate. As usual, pizza lunch will be provided in Room 214.

All classes normally held between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9 are cancelled to permit students to attend.  In addition, classes scheduled prior to the meeting should be dismissed by 11:15 a.m., and classes scheduled after the meeting should plan to start at 12:45 p.m. to allow students to attend.

Wednesday morning classes held in Room 215 and 214 must be concluded by 11:00 a.m. on February 9 to allow for set up prior to the meeting.

Each spring the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University conducts a portfolio scholarship competition—a juried competition in which portfolios are judged on their artistic merit by AIB faculty and/or other visual art professionals. The portfolio competition takes places at the end of the academic year.
 
Application Requirements
Applicants must be currently enrolled, full- or part-time matriculated AIB students who will be taking at least 6 credits in Fall 2010. Financial need is not necessary in order to enter the competition. All applicants must complete the registration form.
 
Portfolio Requirements
All portfolios should be limited to 10 pieces. Portfolios must represent original work initiated or completed during the 2009-2010 academic year. Each piece should be identified (either front or back) with your full name, major and grade level as of September 2009 (e.g. Foundation/Freshman; Illustration; Sophomore). The work must completely fit into a portfolio case onto which one copy of your registration form has been attached. Do no submit work that has been framed. 3-D entries must be photographed, in either slide or digital format.
 
Awards
A best AIB overall portfolio will be awarded a scholarship. Six portfolios will be chosen as best of the their departments and awarded scholarships. The awards are tuition reductions with half of the award given each semester of the 2010-2011 academic year. Half or part time students (taking 6-11 credits) will receive pro-rated awards. Students who have completed fewer than 6 credits, non-matriculating students, and recipients of full Presidential Scholarships are NOT ELIGIBLE for the Portfolio Scholarship Competition.

Drop Off
Drop off your work in room N220 on FRIDAY, MAY 7th. All work must be submitted by 5 pm.
 
Portfolio Pick up
Due to limited space and resources, portfolios cannot be stored at AIB for the summer.
Students MUST pick up work on May 14th in room N200/N210.
Reminder: 601 Newbury is card access only.

Mass Four by Elisa Finos

Artist Statement: My art has biological references, though it is abstracted in both form and material. My ideas evolve greatly from original sketch to final product, since exploration of the behaviors of the chosen materials guides the direction of the work. My forms are organic, but loosely structured - a sort of 'soft geometry' - and are created using various fabrics, wire, stuffing, gel and latex media. I am fascinated with how texture can be either inviting or repulsive, and I enjoy playing with such dualities.

Current projects: I am creating an installation piece for my BFA thesis exhibition in the spring, which will consist of hanging fabric/latex sculptures juxtaposed against seated sculptures made with nylon, foam, and wire.

Last gallery show that made impression on me: Kristen Hassenfeld created a magical installation with huge illuminated paper sculptures show at the David Winton Bell Gallery in Providence (now closed).

AIB 24 Hour Building Access

As most of you know, each semester we plan several dates when students have 24 hour access to AIB’s two buildings. Typically, these are planned to occur toward the end of the semester when you are preparing final projects or studying for final exams.

For safety and security reasons, students are required to complete and submit the attached form for each night that they intend to stay in our facilities beyond our usual hours.  The form is also available at AIB’s reception desk, 700 Beacon Street and when completed, it should be given to the guard on duty at 700 Beacon Street.
 
We hope that these extended hours are useful as you prepare to complete your classes this semester and we wish you all the best as you do so.

Please note that the first overnight is Sunday, November 1st 

Janna Hovsepian: ArtChems.com

AIB student Janna Hovsepian has created Art Chems, a website devoted to inform and raise public awareness about paint safety in the art school environment. Janna offers a range of information about chemicals commonly found in art schools and the impact they have on us.

The Art Chems project was completed for the Humans and the Environment course offered at AIB.
