Year of the Dragon Group Show @ FOE Gallery

Year of the Dragon Group Show
March 9-April 8. Opening reception Friday, March 9th 6-9pm. 

FOE celebrates the first of their second year of art openings with the “Year of the Dragon” group show.  Dragons and dragon mythology have inspired artists for over 2000 years.  Come out to see works by local and international artists, including AIB's Illustration faculty Ryan Maguire (shown below), as they interpret the legendary, mythical creature.  Eastern dragons are characterized as a benevolent force bringing good fortune and prosperity.  They adorn temples and are depicted in artwork, literature and film.  In the 2012 year of the dragon we should all try to channel our positive power to radiate goodwill and blessings, or at least, look at some cool dragon art.  The show will remain up through Sunday, April 8th.

On The Wall: Tegan Harmonay & Mike Centeno

             

AIB Illustrators Tegan Harmonay and Mike Centeno have been hard at work. These senior illustrators are currently displaying final pieces, as well as process work on the second floor of 700 Beacon.

During Tegans senior year she is focused on developing a series of character illustrations inspired from her roots in NY, more particularly the MTA North in NYC. "Since taking Junior studio last semester I've realized how much I love creating characters, most of them are derived from past experiences and relationships, but this project is going to be a little different."  Tegan hopes to complete the series by the end of April 2012. 

You can also see Tegan's sketchbook, which is featured as part of the Sketchbook Project 2012. The tour begins April 14th at the Brooklyn Art Library.

For Mikes final semester he is transitioning his school projects into the real world! For the rest of the semester Mike plans to write the basic structure of his first foray into graphic novels. Mike is set to have final pages done by May, his current focus is "diving deep into defining who these characters are and where the story is going to go."

Since January Mike has also been interning at DigBoston doing the weekly illustration for Oh Cruel World!; a reader based column where people write in to complain about different aspects of the city. As for other future projects, Mike is planning on submitting a strip for the Hellbound comic compilation being produced by the Boston Comic Round Table. Since taking Alternative Comics and The Graphic Novel class last semester, with Tim Finn, this artist has found himself more proactive in exploring the medium. " I've always been obsessed with this medium, yet always found excuses not to work on." Get to it Mike!

Studio Visit: F84 Games

AIB Illustration Faculty Ryan Maguire recently visited Floor 84 Studios during his Hartford Illustration MFA contact period in Pasadena, CA. Floor 84 was founded by Jeff Hardy, a graduate of Syracuse University Illustration program.

F84 illustrates, designs, and develops interactive content for various games and mobile devices. Recent projects include; Man vs. Wild, Dragon Eggs, Dinger, and Hip Hop DJ. Check out their demo reel here. Below are some pics from F84 studio visit.

Student Pick: Dan Milligan

Many artists are associated with the Californian based company, Massive Black, including Wes Burt, Jason Chan and James Kei. One who stands out in particular, however, is Dan Milligan, a concept and storyboard artist based in Toronto, Canada. In an industry where it is easy to slip through the cracks and fall into a melting pot, Dan Milligan’s work stands out amongst highly rendered figures and clean cut skylines.

One thing that is immediately noticeable about Milligan’s portfolio is the distinct, energetic style that dominates his work. His background as a storyboard artist is readily apparent in his character renderings, simultaneously quick and precise. His style is gestural, capturing only what is needed to convey a scene. His compositions lean towards the dramatic, effortlessly pulling the viewer into the scene. It’s easy to simply stare at his paintings, analyzing the way he captures everything with just a splash of color in the distance.

Dan Milligan has many projects under his belt, including Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300 and video games published under Sony Entertainment. Despite the fact that Milligan is constantly creating art for other people, he doesn’t ever lose his own identity as an artist. Unlike some concept artists working in today’s day and age, Dan Milligan keeps his basic visual style intact no matter which client he is producing work for. In concept art, in which it can be difficult to tell artists apart due to the polished style that clients demand, this is a refreshing change of pace.

It is for these reasons that any aspiring artist should look at Dan Milligan’s portfolio. His personal website, simple to navigate, features both concept art for film and games and storyboards. With his knack for energy, it no doubt serves as an inspiration for not just those wishing to go into storyboards or preproduction art, but for those wishing to add more movement to their own work as well.

The Nigel Cromwell Fundraising Event | Call for Artists

Dear Friends,

Nigel Cromwell was a great young artist who graduated from The Art Institute of Boston in 2002. He is sorely missed by many. His family, friends, and fiance Erica have been putting together The Nigel Cromwell Foundation, and the first fund raising event will be held June 19th at The Artist's Collective in Hartford, CT.

Please donate art. The event will be held with approximately 150 guests all bidding on the work. The proceeds will be used to set up scholarships, summer workshops, and other creative ventures that are geared at giving the artistic youth something to look forward to.

If you can help, please let me know how many pieces you would be willing to donate. The works will need to be in my hands by June 10th—a little less than one month from today. Also, if you are in any way affiliated with The Art Institute of Boston and can forward this on to others who knew Nigel or would be interested in donating work, please do so.

Lasty—I will need those who are considering donation to email me with the pieces that they will be sending, size, media, etc. I will then get to you the address the work will be shipped to.

AIB 2010 Senior Animation Show

The world premier of the 2010 Senior Animation Show opens on May 13 at the Brattle Theatre [map] from 3–5pm. The after party will be held at the AIB's 601 Newbury Street building [map] from 7–9pm. Grab your popcorn!

Operation Santa Drop!

 

Help Santa deliver presents this year!

Created by AIB Alumni Mark Mullaney and Lajos Kamocsay, who released iCarve earlier this October, are proud to release their Christmas Holiday collaboration! Operation Santa Drop ready for download from iTunes!

Use the buttons on the bottom of the screen to drop presents. Make sure you match the color of the present to the color of the house! Be precise: the presents have to slide right thru the chimney. If you miss by a bit, the present will punch a hole through the roof.

You can get closer to the chimneys by tilting your phone, but make sure you don’t crash into houses! The game is over when you miss 5 presents or hit a house. Santa has a tough job!
